Stump Grinding in Sanford

An old stump trips mowers, hosts termites and fungus, and breaks up a clean lawn. We grind it below grade, follow the surface roots and leave the ground level and tidy. The same small crew that walks your yard with you does the grinding.

Removing what the tree left behind

Stump grinding takes a cutting wheel to the stump and its root flare, turning the wood into chips until the stump sits several inches beneath the soil line. Nothing is pulled out of the ground. That means far less disturbance to your lawn, your driveway and the irrigation lines around it than digging a stump out would cause.

It is the right call when a tree is already down and you want the space back for grass, a bed or a patio. If the tree is still standing, our tree trimming and removal crew can take it down and grind the stump in the same visit. Palm stumps are a separate case. They are fibrous rather than woody, and we grind them as part of palm tree pruning and removal or on their own.

What the work includes

  1. 01

    Grinding below grade

We take the stump down well under the soil surface so sod or mulch can go right over it. The depth is set by what you plan to put there next, and we confirm it with you before we start.

  2. 02

    Surface roots followed out

The thick roots that ripple across a lawn are ground along their length, not just at the trunk. This is where most of the mower damage and tripping comes from.

  3. 03

    Utility locate before we cut

We request a Sunshine 811 locate for buried lines before grinding. We also ask where your sprinkler heads and lines run so we can work around them.

  4. 04

    Chips handled your way

You can keep the grindings as mulch for a back bed or have us haul them off. Where we haul them, we backfill the hole with soil so it does not sink later.

  5. 05

    Cleanup of the work area

Grinding throws chips across nearby beds, walks and siding. We rake, blow and sweep the area before we leave, so the yard looks finished rather than half-done.

Signs a stump is ready to go

  • New shoots at the base

Some hardwoods keep sending up sprouts from the stump for years. Cutting them back only encourages more growth until the stump is ground out.

  • Soft wood or mushrooms

A stump that crumbles or grows fungus is rotting, and that decay draws termites and carpenter ants. It is better gone before they move toward your home.

  • Mowing around it every week

If you trim by hand around a stump or have nicked a mower blade on a root, grinding gives you an open, level lawn again.

  • Plans for the space

A new bed, fresh sod or a paver patio needs clear ground. Stumps and their roots are the usual reason those projects stall.

  • Leftovers from storm season

After a summer of strong storms, many yards have stumps from trees that came down or were taken down for safety. They are worth clearing before the next growing season.

How a grinding day goes

  1. 1

    Walkthrough and estimate

We look at each stump with you, measure it, check gate width and access, and talk through chips and backfill. You get a free estimate written out by stump, with nothing left vague.

  2. 2

    Locate and protect

Once buried lines are marked, we flag sprinkler heads and set guards where chips could hit windows, cars or a pool screen.

  3. 3

    Grind and chase roots

Compact grinders fit through most side gates and keep tracks light on the lawn. We work the stump down, then follow the main surface roots outward.

  4. 4

    Fill, rake and clean

Chips are spread or removed, the hole is backfilled, and the area is raked level. The same people who started the job walk it with you before they leave.

How each stump gets quoted

Every stump gets its own line on your estimate, and we go over each one with you before a grinder is unloaded. Some stumps simply take more time than others. You will hear the reasons standing in your yard, never as a surprise on the bill.

Diameter and root flare
Width measured at ground level matters most. A broad flare on an old oak adds a lot of wood to grind compared with a straight trunk.
Number of stumps
Several stumps in one visit cost less each than a single one, since setup and travel are shared.
Access to the yard
Narrow gates, slopes, fences or stumps tight against a slab or foundation take more careful, slower work.
Roots and depth
Chasing long surface roots or grinding deeper for a patio base takes added time beyond the stump itself.
Chips, fill and finish
Hauling grindings, bringing in topsoil, or laying sod over the spot are separate choices, and each is listed on its own.

Stump grinding questions

How deep do you grind?

Deep enough for what comes next. Below a lawn we go several inches under grade so sod roots into soil, not wood. For a patio or new tree, we go deeper and tell you so up front.

Will the roots keep growing back?

Most stumps stop sprouting once the root crown is ground out. A few species can push up a shoot or two afterward, and those die back quickly with simple clipping. We will tell you if your tree is one of them.

Can I plant a new tree in the same spot?

Yes, though it is better to offset it a few feet. The old roots break down slowly underground, and fresh soil off to the side gives a new tree an easier start.

Will the grinder damage my lawn or sprinklers?

Our grinders are compact and leave light tracks that recover. We mark your sprinkler lines before cutting, and if a head is near the stump we plan around it with you first.

What if the stump sits right next to my house?

We slow down, shield the wall and windows, and grind in short passes near the foundation. We are a business licensed company, fully insured, and we have been doing this work in Sanford since 2018.

Can I pay for a larger project over time?

Yes. Stump grinding pairs well with tree work, sod or a new bed, and the whole project can be financed. Amounts go up to $100,000, terms run anywhere from 2 to 12 years, and paying the balance off early carries no penalty.
